When More is More

I’m not a minimalist by nature, but I’ve tried to be in our small kitchen. Because of this, I decided not to replace our non-stick skillet when it got warped last year.  We are by no means fancy cooks, and I figured we could survive with a stainless-steel skillet.  This worked pretty well until I decided to make X-man scrambled eggs for breakfast on a regular basis (crazy – I never do this for the adults in the house).  A simple task except for one thing: the clean-up.  Not surprising that it was a total pain.  So much so that I would avoid cleaning the kitchen so I wouldn’t have to clean the pan. Grocery List Joy

I try to avoid hyper-organization, but sometimes I can’t help myself.  What can I say…I’m an engineer and an organizer; there almost always has to be a better way 🙂  I recently turned my process improvement focus to our grocery list.  I’ve used a pre-made grocery list for a couple years; it made the grocery list making process a little easier, but I was still feeling frustrated.

Lifestyle Changes, Not Resolutions

This is the “I’ve already not kept my New Year’s resolution” time of year.  I’ve never liked New Year’s resolutions for the following reasons:

  • I’ve never been good at keeping them.
  • It is too much to make a big change on the first of the year.
  • I always try to do too big of a change.

And what if I don’t keep my resolution?  It’s too easy to tell myself to wait until the next year to make a change. (more…)

The Inefficient Files: When being inefficient makes life more enjoyable.

A common tip to reduce menu planning and dinner time stress is to eat the same thing on the same night a couple times a week.  I do not doubt this reduces stress, but it is a little constraining and boring for me.  I used to reduce dinner time stress by not menu planning at all; when I lived in Los Angeles, the avocados were so good I lived on guacamole and chips several nights a week.  However, this can also get a little boring and isn’t the healthiest of diets.
